The development of molecular nanotechnology (MNT) will require continuous risk management in order to realize the technical and economic benefits with minimum negative security and environmental impacts. Rick assessment is not an intuitive process. Assessments may over or under value specific risks, or fail to consider upside opportunities as well as risk.

This paper classifies the nature of the risks, and recommends candidate risk mitigation procedures, in cluding designing out certain categories of risk, and the possibility of an international MNT consortium with risk management guidelines for technology development and deployment.
